About Au Chat Kwan
Au Chat Kwan has dedicated years of his life towards opening the eyes of thousands across the globe to wonders of Singaporean culture. As a local travel blogger, he explores every nook and cranny that Singapore has to offer.
Humble Beginnings
Born in a small kampung in rural Singapore, Au Chat Kwan has watched the island nation grow from the tiny fishing port into the thriving metropolis that we see today.
He was gifted a canon camera for his 15th birthday which soon sparked his interest in the art of photography. Enamored with the rapid progress the country was making, he set out to record every aspect of Singapore life before it was lost to time.
By the time he was 20, he won the award for best aspiring photographer of 1994. Thanks to his efforts, readers of his blog are able to enjoy or reminisce of the olden days of Singapore.
Nature Photography
As fascinated he was with the industrial advancements of Singapore, he was also intrigued by the local fauna and plants nestled within the garden city. From the glamorous peacock strutting around botanical gardens to the tiny critters scuttling across the forest floor, Au Chat Kwan captures it all. While our concrete jungle grows, the natural domain of Singapore shrinks with each passing year. As an avid nature lover and vegan, Au Chat Kwan has made it his life’s work to preserve the lush forested areas that still remain. He has worked in tandem with renown organizations such as National Geographic in order to spread awareness of conservation efforts. Going on arduous expeditions, he has managed to capture images of endangered animals long thought extinct. His fervor to protect his environment has inspired others to take up the mantle of conservation as well. He does not limit his efforts solely to photography either. Au Chat Kwan has also supported the effort by helping to clear the swamplands of litter which are detrimental to its inhabitants. He records his efforts in his blog to further encourage others to abandon wanton wastage and to aid their wild neighbors in any way they can. In his words, “There is no such thing as too small an effort. We all live on this beautiful island and have a responsibility to protect it.”
Educating The Next Generation
As many yearn to follow in the footsteps of this inspiring photographer, Au Chat Kwan has started to impart his various photography techniques in Nanyang Polytechnic. Through his comprehensive insights, students have been able to expand their horizons on what constitutes a great photo and incorporate their own unique twists for their shots. Throughout his journey, Au Chat Kwan hopes to continue his work and hopefully pass on the torch to the next generation, allowing the intricate art of photography to live on.
